Purpose:
Cloud Captain is responsible to lead our Azure cloud cost management, infrastructure management, and operation management with deep expertise in FinOps to lead our Azure cloud infrastructure and cost optimization strategy. This role combines technical leadership in Azure cloud management with a strong focus on cloud financial operations, ensuring cost transparency, financial accountability, and continuous optimization of cloud resources. The ideal candidate will drive cloud adoption, governance, security, and cost-effective cloud architecture, and will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure that cloud costs are optimized while supporting business objectives.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
- Cloud Strategy & Adoption: Lead the development and execution of the organization’s cloud strategy with a focus on Azure. Guide teams in cloud adoption, architecture design, and migration to ensure cost-effective solutions and business agility.
- FinOps Leadership & Strategy: Lead FinOps initiatives to ensure a culture of cost transparency, financial accountability, and optimization within the Azure cloud. Drive the financial operations of the cloud to ensure effective cost management and budgeting.
- Cloud Infrastructure Management: Oversee the management and deployment of Azure resources, ensuring they are scalable, secure, and cost-efficient. Monitor cloud services and ensure that infrastructure optimally supports the business needs.
- Cloud Governance & Compliance: Establish and enforce cloud governance frameworks and policies. Ensure that the organization adheres to regulatory and compliance standards related to cloud services.
- Cost Transparency & Forecasting: Establish clear visibility of cloud spend across departments. Work with finance, engineering, and operations teams to create accurate forecasts, budgets, and cost allocation models to drive cost transparency.
- Chargeback Models: Implement chargeback models to track and allocate cloud costs across different departments, ensuring that the cost of cloud resources is allocated fairly and transparently.
- Cloud Cost Optimization: Identify and implement opportunities for Azure cost optimization, including rightsizing, leveraging reserved instances, and using auto-scaling features to reduce waste and inefficiencies. Work proactively to manage costs across the entire Azure environment.
- Azure Billing & Pricing Expertise: Become the subject matter expert for Azure pricing models, billing structures, and usage patterns. Help teams optimize resource provisioning based on Azure’s pricing structure and ensure that cost-effective measures are in place.
- Collaboration Across Teams: Work closely with development, DevOps, IT operations, and business teams to design and optimize cloud architectures. Act as a bridge between business requirements and cloud solutions.
- Performance & Cost Reporting: Develop, maintain, and present cloud financial dashboards and reports that provide insights into spending trends, usage patterns, and opportunities for further optimization.
- Cloud Security & Risk Management: Ensure that cloud infrastructure is secure by implementing security measures and working with the security team to manage risks associated with Azure cloud resources.
- Incident Response & Troubleshooting: Lead cloud incident management, providing hands-on troubleshooting for cloud infrastructure issues, especially those impacting cloud cost, performance, and availability.
- Team Management: Create, review, finalize team and personal KPIs, mentor and guide cloud engineers. Develop training programs for teams to improve cloud literacy and best practices across the organization.
The more points that apply to you, the more you can earn with us:
- Owning skills at least 2+ years experience in cloud financial management (FinOps), 6+ years experience in managing and leading cloud infrastructure and services (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, etc.) particularly in Azure
- Strong understanding of FinOps principles, including cloud cost transparency, budgeting, and forecasting, expertise in Azure cost management tools (e.g., Azure Cost Management, Azure Advisor)
- Experience with cloud financial governance frameworks, including managing costs, compliance, and optimization practices and tools
- Strong knowledge of cloud security, governance, and compliance frameworks (e.g., ISO 27001, GDPR, SOC 2)
- Experience with scripting and automation tools (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible, etc.)
- Completed studies in computer science, information technology, engineering or a related field or equivalent work experience
- Very good English skills (German is an additional benefit)
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Strong leadership skills and experience managing cross-functional teams.

- Preferred: Cloud certifications: Azure Solutions Architect, or FinOps Certified Practitioner, experience in building and leading FinOps teams or managing cloud financial operations at scale, leading Azure cloud operations at scale, CI/CD pipeline implementation and automation, Agile and project management methodologies.
